The Guanling Mountain Hotel consists of 10 standard units, 5 luxury units and a large villa in addition to a large Restaurant, Cafe, Teahouse and culture building. The site is located on the mountainous region to the north west of Sichuan province, China. The local vernacular style utilises dry stone walls in construction and so it was decided to borrow from this construction method and combine this technique with clean modern lines to create a modern interpretation of the traditional building style of the region. The site is very undulating, rising some 60m from the entrance carpark to the villa and so negotiating this steeply sloped terrain became a primary design driver in the project. Views to the North and south of the site ridge capture the ‘cloud sea’ in the morning and evening as the valley fills with clouds flowing down from the Himalayan Plateau.
