The Yakma Gallery and Production Space is a multi-functional arts building in the remote north western region of China. The regions minority groups produce a range of local art and crafts and the Yakma space is designed to accomodate both the production and storage of these as well as to act as a studio, public interface and showroom for the artists and business. The main public showroom volume is added to an existing building which houses the production facilities. Through use of local materials and modern forms the design seeks to create a new approach to local architecture, borrowing from but also enhancing the design aesthetic of the regions past, bringing modern ideas to push the design language forward into the future. This is a pro bono project undertaken in collaboration with the creators of the Yakma Studio.
